The Just Yesterday series uses iconic pop culture references to put systemic injustices from our recent past into context — injustices that continue to oppress communities of color to this day.
MULLETS CAME AND WENT BEFORE WE ELECTED THE FIRST BLACK GOVERNOR IN AMERICA
Limited run sold exclusively by the WAM Shop.
P.B.S. Pinchback was the first African American to serve as a state’s governor in 1872, but he was never elected to office. While Pinchback was serving as Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, the elected Governor Henry C. Warmoth was impeached, and Pinchback became the Governor. But it would be well over 100 years later until an African-American was elected to be governor of a state. That milestone wasn’t reached until 1989, the decade of the “mullet” hairstyle.
