Just Yesterday Space Pilots Poster
Regular price $20.00
While the first white American went to space in 1961, Black Americans weren’t even allowed to be commercial airline pilots until 1963, let alone astronauts. The first African American commercial pilot was David Ellsworth Harris, in 1964, after a landmark Supreme Court decision. The lawsuit that led to that decision was brought by another African American pilot, Marlon DeWitt Green. When the Supreme Court ruled in Green’s favor, he opened the door for Black pilots like Harris, and Green himself became a pilot for Continental in 1965. The first African American astronaut wouldn’t come for nearly 20 more years when Guion Bluford went to space for NASA in 1983.
